Houston, Texas rapper Skyler Jones presents “Bout The $”, his new single produced by Adot The God (Bezz Believe, Taylor J). Skyler was formerly in a group called The Classmates with fellow Houston rapper Travis Scott. “My inspiration is my family,” Skyler says. My little 14-year-old sister and my mom. I lean on her, she leans on me. We got each other through anything.”
Over the last three decades, Chad Smith has become one of the most recognizable figures in rock and rhythm. As drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, he’s sold more than 80 million albums and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. With super-group Chickenfoot and the Bombastic Meatbats, he’s expanded into a variety of musical genres with an extraordinary assortment of collaborators. And now Smith – in conjunction with creativity house Scenefour – has debuted his fine art collection PARALLAX, which utilizes sophisticated technology to visually harness Smith’s preternatural drum skills, previously seen only through sound, now rendered gloriously visible.
Smith was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he first picked up the drumsticks at the age of seven. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were told that Smith “eats drums for breakfast” shortly before he was tapped as their permanent drummer in 1988. Seven Grammys later, Smith is #10 on Spin’s list of the 100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music, and has recorded with Johnny Cash, John Fogerty, The Dixie Chicks, Kid Rock, and Dick Van Dyke, with whom he recorded the 2010 children’s album Rhythm Train, named by MTV as one of the best children’s records of all time.
Completed in Los Angeles in 2015, the Chad Smith’s PARALLAX collection is the latest in the rhythm-on-canvas medium pioneered by art team SceneFour and a select group of the world’s most acclaimed drummers including Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead), Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), and Rick Allen (Def Leppard). Using lit drumsticks in much the way a painter would brushes, Scenefour’s innovative techniques capture Smith’s strokes as he plays, making for a series of 13 unique, limited-edition canvas pieces, all numbered and individually signed by Smith. A portion of all proceeds will benefit Camp Korey (campkorey.org), a charity for children with serious medical conditions. Visit www.chadsmithart.com for exclusive information.

The “Right On” clip comes on the heels of the release of their clip for “MF” (watch). Besides his collaborations with Blu, Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound and J-Live, Yamin’s work as one half of Atlanta rap duo Clan Destined garnered them a 5 out of 5 rating from Creative Loafing for their album Self Titled. AllHipHop named Yamin one of 2014’s top 50 artists, and Yamin’s self-titled solo debut album landed on Dart Adam’s Top 50 Albums of 2013 list. Illastrate has produced for Treach of Naughty By Nature, DoItAll from Lords of the Underground and Boog Brown.”I’ve been targeted since I can remember,” Yamin says about the inspiration for the song. “Being asked by shop owners to produce receipts when leaving stores or having cops ask me what gang I’m in since seven years of age, all while having to watch my back in my own space around people who look like me.”
Portland, Oregon duo Illmaculate & OnlyOne present the Stephan Lerch-directed music video for “Only & Ill”, the title track from their new album out now featuring Crooked I, Yukmouth, Hippie Sabotage and Sapient. Illmaculate won 2004’s Scribble Jam (the youngest emcee ever to do so), two World Rap Championships and this year’s King Of The Dot title. The album’s release comes on the heel of the video clip for single “Can’t Take That Away” (watch). Illmaculate has collaborated with Macklemore (click here to listen to the “Letterhead” remix and here to listen to “Do It Themselves”), Inspectah Deck (click here to listen to “How You Do That”) and Tech N9ne (click here to listen to “Go Study”). Illmac and OnlyOne together have accrued over 16 million Youtube views and have toured nationally and internationally alongside Mos Def, E-40, Wu-Tang Clan, Aesop Rock, Yelawolf, Lupe Fiasco and Slaughterhouse. “Only & Ill sort of embodies how Only and my dynamic has been since day one,” says Illmaculate. “In the context of our group Sandpeople, we were the young guns who said the wild shit. Even the line “What you know about Only & Ill?” Is a throwback to an old Sandpeople song where we juggled that rhyme scheme the entire song. The intro is really the tone setter for the hour and change of drug-induced debauchery that follows.”

I wanted to show the world how we have been forgotten but we are still here standing strong. A couple of events happened where I felt obligated to speak on how I felt about them on this record especially, in the inner cities.”
Baltimore rapper Viktor Rasiia presents Lightning Flashes Thunder Crashes, his new album featuring Hartford, CT rapper Gov Mag, and sister Evon Rasiia as well as production by Cartier Jones, Tone Jonez, G Money Baby, Mr Kooman and Rob Luna. As far as the meaning behind the lyrics, I’m getting at anyone misrepresenting Hip-Hop culture. I’m coming for their heads like the Highlander.” Earl Manigault Of Rap drops November 23 on Wane Enterprises.

18-year-old New Jersey rapper/producer mUsa presents “Car Go Van Go”, his new single produced by Loud Lord. mUsa recently dropped U Are Now Viewing (listen), a free concept album featuring collaborations with Willdotquest, Senzo, Flaxeed and Genshin. Producer MeloFlamez handled the boards for the entirety of his previous full-length Captain pUrp (listen on DatPiff). mUsa produces under the alias zayyaf, and is also a graphic designer, designing all his own cover art. “‘Car Go Van Go’ is a track I wrote about carrying the weight of being an artist,” he says. “The track is a play on words ‘Cargo’ meaning weight/something that needs to be carried and ‘Van Gogh’, one of the greatest artists of all time. Van Gogh’s paintings are often psychological and very dark, going back to the theme of the track.”
Chicago emcee Lamon Manuel and Houston producer Analog(ue) Tape Dispenser present the Samantha Wakefield-directed music video for “S–t. Everything We Have Together Is Falling Apart”. Manuel is a member of Chicago collective Tomorrow Kings (Bandcamp). Lamon describes the new single as “a song about watching everything that matters most fall apart and not being sure what to try to save first, wondering if anything is worth saving or if there’s any hope in trying. I had no definitive answers on that when I was writing the song. I don’t really have any now. The woman I thought I’d spend the rest of my life with left me and I just wanted to feel nothing most of the time. I spent a lot of time drinking too much, getting sad literature tattoos and wandering back and forth between the north and south side of Chicago, thinking about the time I had lost investing myself in caring for someone else and now having to figure out who I was and what I wanted without her, if I wanted anything at all. I didn’t have many songs to listen to to probably score what I was experiencing so I ended up writing some. And all of this happened while I was being Black.”
